Absolutely, MEGA has been accepting Bitcoin payments since 2014.

You can choose Bitcoin as a payment option for any Pro plan on the pricing page, except for the monthly Pro Lite.

You can download and install the MEGA Desktop App from here. We offer installers for Windows, macOS, and all major Linux distributions.

Windows:

• Visit https://mega.io/desktop and click the ‘Download’ button for the MEGA Desktop App, or choose ‘Other download options’ to select between 64-bit and 32-bit installers, then click ‘Download’.
• Open the installer from your Downloads folder or by clicking the completed download process in your browser, then follow the installation wizard.

Mac OS:

• Visit https://mega.io/desktop and click the ‘Download’ button for the MEGA Desktop App, or choose ‘Other download options’ to select between Intel and Silicon installers, then click ‘Download’.
• Double-click the downloaded file and drag MEGAsync.app to your Applications folder.
• Open the application – you may see a dialog requesting system authorization. To proceed, please enter your computer username and password.

Linux:

• Visit https://mega.io/desktop and click the ‘Download’ button for the MEGA Desktop App, or choose ‘Other download options’ to select your distribution and version, then click ‘Download’.
• You can also click ‘All downloads‘ to select your custom Linux distribution and version.
• Follow the installation instructions.
• Sign in or create your MEGA account.

MEGA doesn’t have any file size limit. Some users have uploaded single files exceeding 3 TB in size.

The time it takes to upload a large file largely depends on your available upstream bandwidth.

For robust and efficient transfers, we strongly recommend using the MEGA Desktop App

Before creating backups, you need to install the MEGA Desktop app.

In the Desktop app

You have 2 different methods to do this:

1- Open the app.

• Click ‘Add backup‘ (purple cloud) at the top of the screen.   or    Click the three dots.

• Click ‘Add backup‘.

2- Select folders to back up from the list, or click More folders to choose the ones that aren’t in the list, then click Next.

3- Confirm the folders you selected, then click Set up.

• If you’re using a Mac, you might be asked to allow MEGA access to your folders.

4- Your selected folders will start to back up. The duration depends on the size of the folders.

Alternatively:

1- Open the app.

2- Click ‘Settings‘.

3- Click the ‘Backup‘ tab.

4- You can do one of the following:

• If you’re using a Mac, click the plus icon.
• If you’re using Windows or Linux, click ‘Add‘.

5- Select the folder you want to backup.

6- Click ‘Add’.

• If you’re using a Mac, you might be asked to allow MEGA access to your folders.

7- Your selected folders will start to back up. The duration depends on the size of the folders.

In a web browser

To create a backup from the Backup Center, first ensure you’re logged into MEGA in your browser and also running the Desktop app.

• Click the main menu.
• Click ‘Settings’.
• Click ‘Transfers’.
• Click ‘Transfer tools’.
• Enable the switch for ‘MEGA Desktop App’.
• Click the Backup Center icon in the left panel.
• Click ‘Create backup’ at the top right.
• The Desktop app will open, and you can follow the above process to create your backup

The MEGA mobile app allows you to create and upload files directly from your phone or tablet, and the uploaded files will sync to your MEGA account for access anywhere.

If you haven’t enabled automatic camera uploads yet (highly recommended), you can manually upload photos and videos to your account:

In the iOS app:

• Go to the Cloud Drive.
• Tap the plus icon.
• Tap Select Photos.
• Tap the album containing the photos or videos you want to upload.
• Select the photos or videos you want to upload.
• Tap Upload.

In the Android app:

• Go to the Cloud Drive.
• Tap the plus icon.
• Tap Upload Files.

You can directly stream video files from your MEGA account using the MEGA mobile app. Simply tap on the video file, and playback will start automatically.

What if the file type I want to play is not supported?

If your file format is not supported, you can first download the video and then play it in an external player like VLC or Infuse.

MEGA is a zero-knowledge encrypted cloud storage service.

This means that all encryption and decryption processes are carried out by our users, on their devices, with keys that only they have access to.

Here’s how it works:

1. Placing the Key in a Link
   • Link links are added to a URL separated by a # symbol. Their original purpose was to provide links to locations within a page; the browser would automatically scroll to the matching anchor point on the page. Since browsers do not send the link part of the URL when requesting a page, it is very useful when designing a URL format that contains information that should strictly remain on the client side, such as the key.
2. Decrypting File Data in the Browser
   • When opening a link to a MEGA file or folder, the browser initially doesn’t fetch any file or folder data. Instead, it retrieves the decryption key from the link part of the URL later, when the key is needed to decrypt and view the relevant file and folder information. This JavaScript code is highly sensitive from a cryptographic perspective and, therefore, needs to be public, which you can review at https://github.com/meganz/webclient.
3. Decrypting File Data for Download
   • Your browser cannot send the decryption key to the server to decrypt files on your behalf when you start downloading a file; doing so would completely undermine the concept of zero-knowledge encryption. Now, your browser fetches the encrypted data from the server, decrypts it using the relevant key (accessible only from the link part of the URL), and then writes the decrypted result to disk. Unfortunately, there is no standard method supported by all browsers to write to disk, making this step quite challenging. Chromium stands out in this regard, so we recommend using a Chromium-based browser: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge (not the old version), Opera, Vivaldi, etc. Installing the MEGA Desktop App will also help you overcome these browser limitations when downloading files from MEGA.
4. Opening Links in a Local App
   • MEGA links on iOS or Android will automatically open the MEGA app, and none of the browser context-related difficulties apply to local apps. Additionally, they consume significantly less memory and CPU! Therefore, we recommend installing our mobile app. Just like our browser codes, these are also cryptographically sensitive, and we publish the entire source code.

Please note that the cryptographic security of your files depends on the confidentiality of the relevant encryption keys. For the highest level of security, we recommend transferring the encryption key component of a folder or file link through a protected channel. For instance, standard email is not secure.
